In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt took the first step of his 24-hour walk/run/jog around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society.  The following year 220 supporters on 19 teams joined Dr. Klatt in this overnight event and the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life was born!  During the last 19 years, Relay For Life has spread to 3,800 communities across the United States and into eight foreign countries.  What began as one man’s statement in the fight against cancer has led to the American Cancer Society developing a worldwide movement to eliminate cancer.

 WHAT IS RELAY?

Relay For Life is the nationwide, signature event for the American Cancer Society.  It empowers over 2 million volunteers in 3,800 communities across the nation, engaging over 500,000 cancer survivors.  Since its inception in 1985, Relay For Life in its 2003 season reached $1 billion raised to fund cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.

HOW DO WE RELAY?

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.  Teams of 8 – 15 people form from churches, schools, work-places and even families touched by cancer.  The teams camp out overnight at a local high school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path.  Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.  Team members are encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 to help fight cancer.

WHY DO WE RELAY?

This year more than 563,000 Americans are expected to die of cancer, more than 1,500 a day.  Cancer is America’s number one health concern. An estimated 84,500 Texans will be diagnosed with cancer this year and an estimated 34,800 people in Texas will die with the disease.

Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and the one-day cancer will be eliminated.

There is NO finish line until we find a cure!
